Dr. Thomas Sowell - Right about O's Resignation, but Wrong about Miracles

We’ve noted before that Dr. Thomas Sowell is an American treasure, a voice of wisdom and maturity and perspective all too rare in any era, especially our own. We’ve linked to his website from the beginning of Brushfires of Freedom, and wholeheartedly recommend each and every one of his books, including his latest, "Dismantling America".

As a completely irrelevant aside, Sowell happens to be an 80 year old man. And as an even more irrelevant aside, he happens to be black.

If you can spare the time in five minute increments, or just watch the whole thing, this video has a typically thoughtful though sobering interview with Sowell by former Reagan speechwriter Peter Robinson. Two items most caught our attention, and deserve yours.

When asked toward the end, “if there were one sentence you could deliver to President Obama, what would it be?”, Sowell had a one word answer: Resign!

Readers of this site know that calls for Obama’s resignation have been made early and often, and continue to be made. And from the beginning, they have been made in full awareness that the common initial reaction to such a call would be exactly as Peter Robinson reacted to Dr. Sowell’s answer—a big, scoffing laugh to indicate that of course we all know such a call is not serious.

But it is serious, and Dr. Sowell was not joking. The good news for America is that when someone of the stature of Dr. Sowell is willing to say it in a taped interview he knows will be available throughout the world on the web, that indicates the thinking class is ready to start drawing lines in the sand.

We’ve said all along that the power of the moral demands of an aroused and indignant populace cannot be overestimated. It is overwhelming, and we are near to reaching it in this country right now, thanks in particular to the Ground Zero mosque controversy. (As our ruling class elites on the conventional political right and left tell us all to tone it down, real Americans in every corner of this country are rightly enraged and have no trouble whatsoever understanding what this project is all about and why it must be stopped.) Obama can and will be forced out of office if we the people demand it.

So we’re happy to be aligned with Dr. Sowell in calling for Obama’s resignation. But the second item we noticed in his interview involved his concluding comments inferring that it will take a miracle for America to get out of this nightmare and really recover from the systematic dismantling of its ideals that has occurred over the past 50+ years.

We don’t agree that it will take a miracle. But it will take faith, persistence and fortitude.

The starting point for why it will not take a miracle to save America is that America is most emphatically NOT a 50/50 country. It’s essentially a 70/30 country, with a lot of cognitive dissonance stirred up by reason of the fact that the historically mainstream media is not media at all, but has become a Pravda organ for the 30%. Their drumbeat of hysteria at the strong intuitive leanings of the American people cause a portion of the people to lose their confidence, and a majority of the ruling class—of both parties—to tilt all public discussion and decision-making in a direction favored by Pravda. But the 20 months of the Obama administration have exposed Pravda as an institutional form of party hack, not to be believed or feared; and has catapulted the prominence and ubiquity of alternative media, which has been stunningly effective in reassuring Americans that there is a sane majority still in existence.

The prescription for saving America is therefore not complicated:

1. Go to the polls on November 2, and throw out every Democrat.

2. Vote for candidates who will:

a. Repeal Obamacare

b. Repeal the financial institutions regulatory reform bill

c. Repeal or repay whatever portions of the stimulus bill have not been spent

d. Defund every agency controlled by an unvetted czar, unless and until a fully vetted replacement has been appropriately confirmed, and all regulations implemented by unvetted czars are repealed or nullified

e. Defund the Department of Justice unless and until the lawsuit against Arizona is withdrawn

f. Take any legal action available to be taken to stop the GZM

g. Reform Social Security and Medicare promptly, clearly and efficiently along the lines advocated in Paul Ryan’s Roadmap for America.

3. After the election, insist that the new Congress do exactly as they promised.

4. If Obama chooses to veto repeal efforts and an override vote cannot be sustained, defund every agency charged with implementing the repealed bills, and stay with it until 2012 if necessary.

5. Gear up to purge the ruling class once more in 2012.

Faith will be needed, because the Pravda media, or whatever is left of them, will go apoplectic. Let them, and ignore them. Following the America of the founding is following truth, and the truth will make you free. It’s not easy, but it’s that simple.

Persistence will be needed, because a few newly elected Republicans will go wobbly under the intense Beltway pressure to conform to the way things have always been done. Inject backbone into them; urge them to trust the America of the founding; call on them to be new American heroes.

Fortitude will be needed, because it will take time, and the outward evidence that the country has been saved will be aggressively and relentlessly disputed by the hysterical Pravda media. Also, the enemies of America’s ideals of individual freedom and responsibility under the Judeo-Christian God may attack America, literally and figuratively. We will have to fight through and defeat these attacks, just as we have in decades past. And we can collectively turn to alternative media with such clout as to finish off the Pravda relics.

And so we think Dr. Sowell is mistaken in believing that it will take a miracle to save America. We actually don’t think there are any miracles; instead, behind just about every human triumph over evil that is called a miracle, from Biblical times to the present, you’ll find some combination of faith, persistence and fortitude. The 70% in America still have those inherent qualities of character; they just need to stand and deliver on them, beginning November 2. We think they will.
