Less Government = More Freedom = Greater Progress
Imagine a 12 inch horizontal bar, with freedom on the right end and government size on the left. A single sliding marker runs along the bar. A move of the marker to the right means more freedom and smaller government, and a move to the left means less freedom and bigger government. The relationship is that simple.
The American Revolution was grounded in a set of beliefs that placed the marker farther to the right than any applied system of human government before or since. Their placement of that marker was critical to the emergence of America as the shining city on a hill. The marker has been drifting way left; we need to move it back. --Paul Gable

In the summer of 2009, Brushfires of Freedom switched to an all-essay format; we’re just too short-staffed to be a news aggregator or a two-paragraph pundit on daily news. See our “Links of Freedom” for the best news aggregators and daily pundits. But it was fun to do it for awhile, and the comments and links below are still relevant, so we'll leave them up for our readers' pleasure.

OK—Let’s Have Do-Overs
It was interesting to observe Mark Penn, Democrat pollster, offer his prescription for getting Nancy Pelosi out of the mess she’s made for herself on the subject of ‘torture’, the CIA, what she knew, when she knew it, etc., etc. On the MSNBC show “Morning Joe”, here’s what Penn said:
PENN: Well, it is a mess. I think Pelosi would be best off just having a do-over here.
PENN: Just saying, "Look, it was six, seven years ago. Uh, I don't want to contest the CIA. I don't want to divide the country on this issue," and just pull back from the whole position.
HOSTESS: So should she apologize?
PENN: You know, I don't think she should apologize. I think she should pull back.
HOSTESS: All right!
PENN: She has to do a do-over.
Now we’re talking. Let’s endorse ‘do-overs’ for Nancy Pelosi. And while we’re at it, let’s start a national dialogue about the need for a do-over of the November 2008 election. There has never been a bigger fraud in the history of the United States, and the need for its complete overturning and reversal is serious and growing. Read
“Not the Obama We Knew; Not the Government We Chose”.
As it happens, ‘re-do’ works pretty well as an acronym for the rallying cry for this do-over: Repeal Everything Done by Obama.

Just One Honest Poll Away...
We’ve
stated our view
that public thought/opinion has already turned solidly against Obama. The latest abomination involving the release of so-called torture memos is
not playing well
(as noted in this Wall Street Journal piece by Doroty Rabinowitz). Not one intelligence professional has stepped up to support Obama’s action, which had all the markings of a payback to George Soros and the moveon.org hard left. Sentient, patriotic Americans—who comprise the vast majority of the people of this country, regardless of party affiliation—have no trouble understanding the importance of protecting the nation from Islamic terrorists. They also have no trouble understanding how Obama’s action has radically and unnecessarily increased the risk that many more Americans will die in terrorist attacks.
We’ve also said before that the only thing holding up Obama are ‘approval ratings’—the most recent of which by the New York Times was
an obvious fabrication.
We’ll never fathom why Beltway Republicans (or anyone else, for that matter) are frightened by anything printed in the New York Times, but apparently enough of them believe it such that they still won’t stand up and scream to high heaven about the outrageous actions of Obama. Thank goodness the tea parties proved we’re not a nation of mindless fools.
We have no doubt that Soros and his ilk will now go into overdrive to fabricate a poll showing the public’s approval of Obama’s handling of the torture memos. Either the sampling will be skewed, or the questions will be phrased to obscure the real issue and elicit the desired drivel: “Do you agree with Obama that America should not torture?” Miraculously, the headline will then emerge: OMG! 67% of Americans support Obama! Whereupon, the spineless, gutless Beltway Republicans will slink away with the utterly bogus belief that America has changed.
That’s why Brushfires maintains that America is just one honest poll away from stopping this outrage. One honestly sampled, honestly compiled poll—and even the Beltway Republicans might find a backbone. We hope someone will do it.
Our view? If the poll questions were: “Is the agenda of President Obama what you expected from candidate Obama? If you knew before November 2008 that Obama was a hard left ideologue of the kind never before seen in American history, would you have voted for him? –the answers would be about 80% “No” to the first question, and 50% “No” among those who voted for him. And then the march to
demand his resignation
will really get started.

The Truth about Socialism
If you are an intelligent person who wonders what the fuss is all about when the subject is socialism vs. freedom, then block out 10-15 minutes and make yourself read
this excellent essay
from Jeffrey Folks at the American Thinker. Mr. Folks 'gets it' because he lived under socialism, and speaks not of theory but of reality. This is a comprehensive wake up call to all Americans. Obama's agenda must be stopped. Not slowed; not tweaked; STOPPED. NOW. Do everything in your power to help stop it--
call your elected representatives
as soon as you can.
GEMS from Brushfires of the Past
“People constantly speak of ‘the government’ doing this or that, as they might speak of God doing it. But the government is really nothing but a group of men, and usually they are very inferior men.” —H. L. Mencken
The Incomparable Mark Steyn in Synch with Brushfires
It's a Brushfires' staple that "human government is not God" (see
here
).
Mark Steyn
writes with a brilliance and humor few can match, and
his latest column
shows his alignment with this Brushfires' staple. Rather than parodying 'government as god', he makes the same point with government as Superhero. Either way, the utter foolishness, naivete and, ultimately, moral vacuity that would believe in government's power to provide, save, fix, heal, perfect, etc., everything for everyone is exposed. Steyn is a Brushfires favorite, for sure.
