Truth Doesn't Change

1. "Truth does not become more true by virtue of the fact that the entire world agrees with it, nor less so even if the whole world disagrees with it."Maimonides, Jewish philosopher (1135-1204)

2. "There will never be a really free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the individual as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and authority are derived, and treats him accordingly." -- Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

3. The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened. …. I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform. – Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate for U.S. President, 1944

4. Human government is not God. Remember that. Repeat it to yourself and your friends. Human government cannot ‘stimulate’ anything except by respecting God and free people under God. If a political message tells you “only government can save us”, scream “No!” and “Hell, no!” to the message and do not vote for the messenger. Socialism, collectivism, and communism are different words for government control. They violate the truth of God and man’s individual freedom and responsibility under God, and that’s why they have failed and will always fail. --Paul Gable, in Brushfires-of-freedom.com, January 2009

5. "Time for Rebellion by the Real Minority - the Individual" -- Paul Gable, in Brushfires-of-freedom.com, April 2, 2009

We read often in the cutting edge of liberal thought the belief (more like a wish, really) that there can be such a thing as a ‘post-modern’ era—where we ‘outgrow’ the wisdom of the past and fashion a new wisdom, a new morality, a ‘new world order’, a ‘remade America’, etc. Most often this belief is adopted because some moral teaching outlined in that nuisance, the Bible, is getting in the way of the believer’s desire to live life in accord with his own view of morality. Or maybe it’s that this concept of an unseen power, called God, is getting mighty annoying and is interfering with the believer’s view that things would be better off if we just had he and the other right people control everyone and everything.

Sadly, the foundation of this belief is that either there is no such thing as truth, or if there is, that it’s simply too demanding and confining and limiting. Yet Christ Jesus, who said his purpose was to ‘bear witness unto the truth’ also said to his followers that they could know the truth, and ‘the truth shall make you free’. He didn’t speak of truth as a temporary, transient, humanly popular opinion (he also said heaven and earth would pass away, but his words would not pass away). He didn’t speak of truth as limiting, but as freeing.

While it’s a statement that drives liberals/socialists insane, it’s nevertheless accurate: America’s founding ideals are grounded in the truth of God and man. The ideal of ‘individual freedom and responsibility under God’ is a divine ideal. When Jesus taught it and exemplified it, the godless liberal thought of Jesus’ day convinced the state to kill him. When the founding fathers of America set out to establish a nation on this foundational truth, they had to fight and win a bloody war to get it started.

Those who understand the American ideal of freedom under God also understand that it has always been under attack by various ‘isms’ and has had to be defended, sometimes with force. Now it is under attack again, only this time from within the country instead of from outside it. The godless liberal thought of our day consciously tries to avoid the label of socialism or communism or atheism, but no matter what the ‘ism’ is called, it is manifestly opposed to a society based on individual freedom and responsibility under God. It again wants to bury truth, proclaiming that ‘government is the only solution’ and everything will be fine if we just let government control the banks, the auto companies, the healthcare system, what we can eat, what we can drink, what we can set our thermostat to, and on and on and on. This is a lie, and to paraphrase Maimonides, it doesn’t matter if they convince a majority of Americans or even a majority of the world to believe the lie. It’s still a lie.

A current line of liberal attack of conservative thinking is that it is irrationally fearful; that it is a ‘sky is falling’ silliness that doesn’t recognize that nothing all that noticeable has really changed. America hasn’t been attacked; the recession is bad but it’s all Bush’s fault anyway; Obama is trying new things and seems like a cool guy, so just chill and be prepared for the post-modern revelation that there really are new ways of doing things that work.

There will always be ‘post-modern’ innovation in products and services because there is no limit to the creativity of humankind and, when living in freedom, the willingness of humankind to act to improve the human standard of living. But there will never be post-modern revelations as to the nature of man and of man’s relationship to God. Sorry, but that’s a done deal. And when a society turns from the truth of God and man—just as countless Bible ‘peoples’ experimented with turning from God—disaster will follow. As the popular saying goes, it’s a matter of when, not if.

If the tea partiers cannot turn the country around very soon, America is headed for disaster. Liberals can party for awhile; they can argue that through sheer force of government power they can create their own truth—but the fact is they can’t. Truth doesn’t change. They’ve commandeered and are now steering the Titanic, and the rest of us are looking for lifeboats. God help us all.
