About the Author

The essays, comments and miscellaneous posts you will find on Brushfires of Freedom are authored exclusively by me, Paul Gable. I started Brushfires of Freedom in January 2009, as an outlet for the passion I feel for the greatness and goodness of America, her founding ideals, and her Christian heritage, and the profound need to defend and protect and preserve them.

I’ve deliberately chosen to keep my picture and biographical data out of public view, not out of modesty or a need for privacy, but because I’ve observed (as have many others) that today’s discourse in the critical ‘arena of ideas’ is most often derailed and distracted by personal details and biographical data. The uplifting of thought that is so necessary, and so possible when the focus of thought is on ideas rather than the persons espousing them, is undermined—sometimes subtly and sometimes viciously—by the reflexive practice of stereotyping the author and thereby stereotyping, pigeonholing, and straitjacketing the ideas.

By way of qualification, however, I will pass along a few items of personal information. I was educated in name-brand American universities; have been a practicing lawyer for two decades; am very happily married to my first and only wife (over 20 years); have children; attend a Christian church regularly; have worked for good leaders and poor leaders (and I have been an organizational leader myself); and on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best, and 3 being the ‘average American’), consider my familiarity with American history about a 7.5, familiarity with the Bible about an 8, knowledge of capitalism, entrepreneurship, and the economy about an 8.5; and knowledge of world religions about a 7. (Knowledge of college football and basketball is about a 10, but that’s not relevant...). I did not serve in the U.S. armed forces, but count among my most respected friends and acquaintances those who did or are presently serving. Over the course of my life, I have lived in multiple regions of the U.S., including West coast and East coast (and have traveled extensively throughout the country and internationally).

I hope you enjoy and find thought-provoking ideas in Brushfires of Freedom.
